Guidelines For OMAFRA-U of G HQP Scholarship Program Support Funds

Below are the guidelines for student funding that must be agreed to by you and your faculty advisor if you are successful in your application for a HQP scholarship. If successful applicants have any questions about these financial guidelines contact Hosni Taky Elden  or call Hosni at 519-824-4120 x52557.

Guidelines

1. The purpose of this program is to provide funds to Masters or Doctorate graduate students in accordance with the OMAFRA-U of G Partnership HQP Scholarship Program guidelines.

2. Scholarships will be transferred to individual departmental 'OMAFRA HQP project accounts' for each of the approved HQP students. These funds must be received in the hands of the student in the form of an award/scholarship. They may NOT be used for departmental teaching or research operating expenses (supplies, travel, etc.).  Graduate Teaching Assistantships may NOT be paid for from these funds.

3. The maximum annual allocation to students will be based on the following guidelines. (Normally it is expected that students will complete the program in six semesters for a master's by thesis program and nine semesters for a doctorate).

  • First Year of enrolment in program:
    • Master's by Thesis: $17,300 for the year from the HQP Program + $2,000 'top-up' from the supervising faculty member
    • Doctoral: $21,000 for the year from the HQP Program + $5,000 'top-up' from the supervising faculty member
  • Second Year of enrolment in program:
    • Master's by Thesis: $17,300 for the year from the HQP Program + $2,000 'top-up' from the supervising faculty member
    • Doctoral: $21,000 for the year from the HQP Program + $5,000 'top-up' from the supervising faculty member
  • Third Year  of enrolment in program:
    • Doctoral: $21,000 for the year from the HQP Program + $5,000 'top-up' from the supervising faculty member

4. Once HQP students are confirmed, the Office of Research, Strategic Partnerships will inform the Budget office to have individual 'OMAFRA HQP project accounts' (one account for each approved student) set up within the Fund 111, HQP Program, and will arrange transfer of budgeted OMAFRA HQP program funds to the appropriate project accounts on a one-time basis. The dissemination of these funds will be via cheques, made payable to the students, in equal payments at the beginning of each semester and will be handled by the HQP Program administration/managers.

Faculty supervisors, together with admin staff will be responsible for issuing the appropriate yearly 'top-up' funding ($2,000 for Masters or $5,000 for Doctoral students) directly to the student, via payroll, within the first semester of each year of the students program.

Confirmation of payment is to be forwarded to the HQP Program Financial Administrator by the end of the first semester.

5. Funds will be transferred three times per year (at the beginning of each semester). Transfer of funds for years two or three (as applicable) for each student will be subject to satisfactory performance as demonstrated through the required Annual Student Progress Report from the faculty supervisor.

6. Reporting and Accountability:

Funds are only to be made payable to students and may NOT be transferred internally to other trust funds or departmental funds. Student and faculty are required to submit reports during the student's progress through the HQP program.
